The goal of re- and upcycling should be to create beautiful things and not just collect old yogurt cups to use them as flower pots. We will show you how to turn trash into practical art while also being kind to the environment. A positive side effect: it’s fun and boosts creativity.
Recycling means breaking things down to their original state. Plastic goes with plastic, paper with paper, and so on. The example of bottles makes this clear. Bottles with the recycling symbol are collected, melted down, and the material is reused for other products. This way, the raw material doesn’t end up in the trash but gets recycled.
With upcycling, products are not broken down but simply reused. They get a makeover and serve as decorations, storage boxes, or are repurposed for something else useful. Overall, less is thrown away and less needs to be purchased. This saves resources and thus the environment.
A classic example of upcycling is furniture made from pallets. In a simple design without armrests, just with a backrest, they are a good beginner project. You need three pallets, two of which serve as the seat and the third as the backrest. The wood is sanded down and smoothed, then can be painted or stained with wood varnish. Two of the pallets are screwed together to form the seat. The third pallet is diagonally screwed to one end of the seat. Once finished, the couch can be decorated with soft cushions and blankets, adding a touch of style to any balcony.
You will need a branch with a diameter of about 10 cm, which you can find on your next walk in the forest, hooks, and a chain for ceiling mounting. Mark regular intervals on your branch and pre-drill small holes. You can determine the number of holes yourself, depending on the length of the branch and how many hangers you want to attach. Screw the hooks into the wood with the screw side. On the opposite side, only screw in 2 hooks. Attach the chain to these hooks, which will then be hung on the ceiling mount. Once the structure is hanging from the ceiling, hang clothes hangers on it. Tip: For a cozier feel, wrap a string of lights around the clothes rack.
